September
- The weather is mild, the birds are active, courtship everywhere.
Birds of prey are regular, Brown Goshawks, Collared Sparrowhawks, Hobbies
are occasional , but not unusual. We have the Reddest-back Wren we have ever
seen! Also the Bluest Blue Wren and the most Variegated Variegated.
The Grey Fantails have disappeared! That means spring!
- Our first sighting of a Dtella this spring, feasting on
the abundance of insect life on the verandah after dusk.
October
- While Ann was Birdathoning here today, we found 51 species before lunch, including
Double-barred Finches, Zebra Finches, a party of 12 or so
Chestnut-breasted Mannikins and a solitary Plum-headed Finch.
Pacific Bazas are active in their usual nest tree every morning.
Little Egret and Australasian Grebes are here every morning.
Near to dusk, we sat by the creek with some other visitors in the hope of seeing some
early evening bird-life. The Azure Kingfisher obliged, as did our recently
resident Little Egret. Just before dark a Rufous Night-heron
glided by downstream. Soon after another Night-heron flew overhead and then
dropped onto the mud alongside the creek, very close to where we were sitting.
We watched him stalk the margin, and then fly onto the mid-stream post, no more
than 15 metres away, which is at other times frequented by Cormorants
and Darters. Double-barred Finches are nesting in the melaleuca
just outside the bathroom window.
November
- We had finished breakfast and I had completed a little work in the office,
when I walked past the French windows and casually picked up a pair of convenient
binoculars to scan the creek margins. On the wet edge of the shingle stood a
small dark bird, perhaps a Bar-shouldered Dove? But it looked somehow wader-like.
Too big however for a Black-fronted Dotterel or a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper.
Then the bird moved, revealing itself unmistakably as a Painted Snipe!
- Little Egret in breeding plumage, Sacred Ibis in the creek bed,
Black-fronted Dotterels this morning. Azure Kingfisher an everyday
regular.
- An exciting bird morning. Cicadabird, Leaden Flycatcher male and
female, White-winged Triller female, Pacific Bazas at the nest,
Pallid Cuckoo calling. The Cicadabird was in the open for much of
the morning, Bazas calling in their nest tree, White-winged Trillers
mating. Rufous Night Heron, approx. 35 spp during the morning. Many
White-throated Needletails.
Common Bronzewing in the late afternoon.
