December
- An amazingly bird-filled morning. White-winged Triller male and female, all four cormorants,
Darter, Royal Spoonbill, Whistling Kite, Pallid and Horsfield's Bronze-Cuckoos,
Channel-billed Cuckoos and Koel, Fork-tailed Swifts, White-backed Swallows, female
Leaden Flycatcher, Grey-crowned Babblers, and a strong-flying Peregrine Falcon.
Possible White-rumped Swiftlets with the Fork-tailed Swifts.
Pacific Baza sitting on a new nest in the baza tree. 60 species before lunch at Abberton.

Three Ground Cuckoo-Shrikes
this morning. As we sat on the verandah later than usual this evening,
Eileen noticed a Tawny Frogmouth in the big Forest Red Gum, and moments later it was standing on the
verandah rail, no more than 10 feet from my chair. The bird returned to the Red Gum, at which point we
realised that there were two Frogmouths in the tree; then one flew past us and into the darkness
to the west of the house, followed by the second bird - which landed on the roof, with his tail hanging
over the gutter. They continued flitting nearby, until it became too dark for us to see them.
January
- The Pacific Bazas are very active, and change over at the nest at intervals of less than 10 minutes,
sometimes bringing food, sometimes small leafy twigs. Certainly feeding young. An unusual visit this morning
from a Blue-faced Honeyeater, who clambered along a small branch very close to an adjacent Baza.
Four cuckoo spp. during breakfast, umpteen passerines.
- It has concerned us that the male White-winged Triller has not been seen for several days.
There are two sturdy young in the nest, and the female is busy bringing food to them all day long.
She has been so active in fact that we have wondered if more than one bird was present, leading us to
contemplate whether the male might in fact have taken on an eclipse plumage.
While I watched one bird taking food to the nest, Eileen spotted another "brown" triller in a tree about 30m
away. Thus, our suspicions that the male bird has entered eclipse are all but confirmed.
It remains to compare the plumage of the two birds, and to confirm that both are visiting the nest.
Three Ground Cuckoo-Shrikes this morning.
February
- A Grey Goshawk paused in a creek-side tree this morning and stayed for a few minutes before
shifting to a nearby tree, where he stayed for 5 to 10 minutes. Later a Black Bittern flew across
the creek, skulked in the far margin for maybe five minutes and then flew up the creek. Very dark above,
striated beneath with bold face stripe. Mayhe a little smaller than the regular Night-herons.
